The beloved black four-year-old Packard Bell laptop is officially dead. Need a new one, since I'm writing shagall without one.
Am thinking about getting ...
1. A Macbook
Cause everyone says they're better, less viruses, and they're white and pretty. Also I've been using a Mac in work since July and I think I finally understand them. They're expensive though, and I'm not sure I like the whole 'no need for mouse buttons or CD drives' philosophy.
2. A Dell
Cause they have pretty coloured lids and the website has a very clear and helpful step-by-step ordering thingy. But you can only order them online and I've only just clawed my way out of credit card debt.
3. Another random laptop from a shop
Cause I could buy one now, with cash, and probably get a good deal. Haggling's back in, you know.
Any advice?

I bought my first ever one a couple of weeks ago. I'd been considering getting a Dell because they sound so cheap but what they don't tell you is that the basic €499 starting price is for a laptop with absolutely no operating system whatsoever. By the time you add in Windows Vista, a slightly bigger screen, a case and virus protection it starts to creep into the 700s and beyond.
Being an idiot I bought mine on impulse from a shop in Dundrum. It's a very pretty Hewlett Packard and does lots of nice things but I'm pretty sure I paid too much (about a grand). I reckon Argos might be the best way to go, they have all the big brands and they tend to be pretty competitive on pricing for electronics. Just figure out what you actually need and don't get sucked into paying out extra for graphics programs you don't need or an extra 50gb of space that you'll never fill.
End of ridiculously large message now.
Oh wait, not quite, if you're really considering getting a Mac (which i couldn't, i'd miss the right click too much) then i think they do pretty good deals for students if you contact them directly.
macs have right clicks! ever since like 1996! I'm a bit biased here, using them both in work at home but you really can't go wrong with a mac, rock solid, maintaining support is a doddle and if you're looking for a deal check out the refurbished models on the apple site, they're as good and as supported as new and can get some really good specs at pretty large discounts
Andrew - crazy, I also ended up buying a very pretty HP for a grand! There's a cool €130 cashback offer on it though. And it is very shiny.
Lights - I wanted a Mac, I really did, but they're just too scarily dear.
i';ve found your secret sanctuary. Nothing is sacred now Ryan!
It's hateful when you lose your old computer... but nice when you get a new one! I'm a bit wary now of mine, since it's a Packard Bell too... Only a year and half old, but still~~~~
